THE ESSENTIALS

Begin with these three essentials

01 / Choose the right fuel

Use the fuel your appliance was designed for. For wood, that means dry, untreated logs with moisture checked properly — see Choosing & Storing Firewood. If you need a meter, see our recommended moisture meter. If you have a multi-fuel stove, use only the wood or approved solid fuels listed by the manufacturer; our multi-fuel guidance explains the basics.

02 / Light a cleaner fire

For wood, a small hot start with plenty of air helps establish clean combustion; a top-down arrangement often works well where the manufacturer permits it. If you are using an approved solid fuel in a multi-fuel stove, follow that appliance’s own lighting and air-control instructions because the fuel bed and airflow requirements can differ.

03 / Run and maintain it well

Use temperature as a guide, keep airways clear, test alarms and arrange regular chimney sweeping and servicing.

Good habits make a better fire

BurnBetter is about making better burning habits second nature: choosing the right fuel, lighting cleanly, using the air controls properly and looking after the stove and flue. That applies whether you use a wood-burning stove or a multi-fuel appliance — but the permitted fuels, grate arrangement and air settings can differ, so the manufacturer’s instructions always come first. Small, repeatable habits can improve heat, reduce smoke and help every stove owner burn cleaner and more efficiently. Use a competent professional where needed.
